3,700 KOSOVO REFUGEES IN ALBANIA - UNHCR

( Editorial: --> 8658 ) BELGRADE, June 3 (Hina) - There are 3,700 refugees from Kosovo registered in neighbouring Albania, UN High Commissioner for Refugees spokesman Mans Nyberg told reporters in Belgrade Wednesday. There are more than 40,000 displaced persons in Kosovo at present, he said, adding between 4,000 and 6,000 had taken refuge in neighbouring Montenegro. Nyberg protested at the fact that police in Kosovo twice prevented UNHCR teams from inspecting the ground. The dramatic situation in the south Yugoslav province of Kosovo was the focus of talks an Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe delegation Wednesday held with Albanian representatives in provincial capital Pristina. The chances of finding a peace solution for Kosovo are fewer by the hour, Kosovo Albanian representatives told the chairman of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Javier Rupirez. They demanded that the international community exert strong pressure on Belgrade to cease the war in Kosovo, as well as a NATO intervention. According to a statement from the Kosovo Information Centre, Kosovo Albanians also warned about massacres Serbian forces were performing in western Kosovo, and about the ethnic cleansing Serbia was carrying out in the province. The OSCE delegation objected to the alteration of internationally recognised borders, and most harshly condemned the violence Belgrade was carrying out in Kosovo. Today Serbian security forces blocked the Pristina-Prizren road, which was Pristina's only connection with southern Kosovo. Serbian forces did not confirm that the Pristina-Prizren road was closed. Serbian sources reported that fire was launched at Yugoslav army units "bivouacking and performing working activities in the wider region" in Crnoljevo Valley on the Pristina-Prizren road, but that there were no casualties.
