13 575 PERSONS GIVEN AMNESTY IN CRO DANUBE REGION

( Editorial: --> 0824 ) ZAGREB, March 19 (Hina) - The Law on General Amnesty pardoned 13,575 people in the Danube River Region up to 18 March this year, said Croatian Justice Minister Miroslav Separovic at Thursday's Government session. He said that these figures were the best proof that the criticisms by Serbs and members of the international community that Croatia was not applying the Law on General Amnesty were unfounded. Premier Zlatko Matesa said that by applying the amnesty law the Croatian Government's obligations arising from the Letter of Intent have also been fulfilled. Separovic said that under this Law the Osijek County Court has pardoned 10,712 persons to date, who had been sentenced for offences committed during the aggression against the Republic of Croatia, such as armed rebellion. In the same period, County State Attorneys have dropped charges against 2,862 persons, relative to the same offences. Separovic said that the pardoned offenders are mainly of Serb nationality and as members of paramilitary units, participated in the armed conflict on the territory on the Croatian Danube River region. He also said the majority of them are inaccessible by Croatian authorities and therefore majority of pardons could not be served on those concerned. Separovic said that the list of 13,575 pardoned persons is not final, given that the Law on General Amnesty is will be further implemented. He reminded that the amnesty is not applicable to those who committed war crimes. Separovic said that the list of pardons will be forwarded to local Serb representatives in the Danubian region and the OSCE mission. Prime Minister Matesa suggested that an urgent meeting be requested between representatives of the Croatian Government and OSCE representatives in Croatia, which would discuss the situation of displaced Croats from Bosnia-Herzegovina because as Matesa emphasised their situation is inadmissible. The Parliament supported his proposal. (hina) mm mrb/as 191440 MET mar 98
