SECURITY IN VUKOVAR SATISFACTORY

( Editorial: --> 0307 ) VUKOVAR, March 17 (Hina) - Vukovar's Trust Establishment Committee holds that the police force in the Croatian Danube River region is becoming more professional and satisfactorily securing the situation. At the Committee's meeting on Tuesday in Vukovar, a representative of the Vukovar-Srijem County police Josip Grcanac said that during February there were 33 reported offences in the territory of Vukovar. Of those, police did not find 4 offenders which means that 84 per cent were caught. In February, minor disturbances of the peace were also reported. The Committee said that citizens did not have enough trust in the police and that measures for strengthening trust should be increased. A member of the Committee and vice-president of the Independent Serb Democratic Party (SDSS) Miroslav Keravica requested that the Committee met more often to tackle the ever increasing economic difficulties in Vukovar, among other issues. High unemployment is the true reason why Serbs are leaving the town and Croats returning in small numbers, affirmed Keravica. He said that to date 1,400 Serbs had gone to Norway. Keravica said his party held that the appointment of people to official posts in the city administration was not in line with election results. Resolutions by the SDSS, the Joint Municipal Council and the former Education Minister Ljilja Vokic regarding education in the Danube region had not been implemented, said Keravica. He said that if the Education Ministry would implement those resolutions then the Serb community's confidence in the Croatian Government's intentions would increase.
