PRISTINA, Mar 1 (Hina) - The situation in the municipality of
Glogovac, in the southern Yugoslav region of Kosovo, is very tense,
the Kosovo human rights committee stated Sunday.
Five Kosovo Albanians and two Serb policemen were killed in a
conflict in Glogovac yesterday, the committee said, adding
firearms could be heard all night in the municipality of Srbica as
well.
Close to 30 pieces of heavy weaponry were this morning sent to the
village of Likoshane near Glogovac where, according to Serb police,
one of their patrols was attacked yesterday. The casualties
included five Albanians and two Serb policemen.
The Kosovo human rights committee said that Serb police were
searching Albanian homes in the village of Koretnica, near
Glogovac, while ten villages with majority Albanian population
were under full police siege since yesterday.
Kosovo Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova called on the United States
and the European Union to exert strong pressure on Belgrade to
immediately end attacks in the Glogovac and Srbica areas.
Rugova pointed out Kosovo Albanians wanted the Kosovo issue to be
solved peacefully and politically.
All Kosovo Albanian political parties most strongly condemned the
large-scale Serb police raid and requested the international
community to urgently intervene in order to avoid further
conflicts.
