JEWISH COMMUNITY IN ZAGREB RECEIVES MICROFILMS ON KILLED JEWS

( Editorial: --> 8414 ) ZAGREB, Jan 30 (Hina) - The director of the Croatian State Archives (HDA) Josip Kolanovic on Friday presented the president of the Jewish Community in Zagreb, Ognjen Kraus, with microfilms on the killings of Jews. Ten rolls of microfilms contain the biographies of 6,537 Jews who were born and worked or lived for some time in Zagreb, and were killed in concentration camps and prisons during World War II from 10 April 1941 to 15 May 1945. At a news conference on Friday, Kolanovic said that the killing of Jews were "a 'black stain' on our history which must not be forgotten and which has to be recalled, stressing the fact that most of the Croatian people condemned such policy of the Independent State of Croatia (NDA) and Ante Pavelic". Kolanovic recalled that the Memorial Museum of Victims of Fascism Yad Vashem in Jerusalem had so far commended 70 Croatian citizens with the medal 'Righteous Among Peoples'. Kolanovic suggested that the Croatian Science and Technology Ministry should investigate the killings of Jews in Croatia. Kraus expressed hope that the results of the research on the killing of Jews in Zagreb would be a stimulus for further research of the problem in the whole of Croatia. The head of the Zagreb Jewish Community Archives, Bozidar Feldbauer said that the Jewish Community was creating a data bank about the Jewish Community in Zagreb and other cities in Croatia in which there are or were Jewish municipalities. Present at the news conference was also the Croatian Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic who said that the Culture Ministry was prepared to support projects important for the Jewish Community, among which was the still unresolved question of the return of the property of Dubrovnik Jews from New York.
