ZAGREB, Dec 10 (Hina) - The Croatian Helsinki Committee (HHO) on Friday gave out its annual awards for contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights in 1999. The awards were given to executive editor of the "Feral
Tribune" weekly, Viktor Ivancic, president of the Citizens' Committee for Human Rights, Zoran Pusic, and former executive director of the Open Society Institute - Croatia, Karmen Basic, who received a posthumous life achievement award. The HHO did not hand an award for the promotion of human rights in the sphere of inter-religious relations this year. Academician Ivo Slaus, who held an opening speech at the ceremony, said in Croatia, non-government organisations and reporters had contributed more to the promotion and protection of human rights than the Croatian National parliament and state institutions.(hina) lml
