ZAGREB, Nov 25 (Hina) - The republic union of Croatian post and telecommunications workers on Thursday said post offices in Croatia had been robbed 103 times since August 1996. The real number of robberies is probably twice the amount, Union president Jadranko Vehar said. Since the beginning of August 1996 until Wednesday's robbery of a post office in Karlovac, more than 200 workers, some of then several times, were subject to assaults by robbers, while the amount of robbed money is still unknown, Vehar said. According to him, more post offices have been robbed in the past three years than in the previous 30 years. The union is requesting for all post offices to be equipped with video surveillance cameras, for the working part of the counter to be separate from the customer part and that customers should approach the cash-register counter individually. The Union is also requesting that during the transport of more than 50,000 kuna (about US$ 6,670) one security officer should accompany the driver and the post office employee. The union has given the Croatian post management board a deadline until July 1, 2000 to fulfil these requests.
