NEW YORK, Oct 15 (Hina) - After seven years of mandate of the UN
monitors on Croatia's southernmost peninsula Prevlaka the
organisation's secretariat is not offering anything new which
could contribute to reaching a permanent solution, permanent
Croatian representative at the United Nations in New York, Ivan
Simonovic, said Friday.
The UNMOP helped maintain the stable situation, but Croatia cannot
accept it stalling forever reaching a final solution which would
guarantee permanent stability and fully respect the inviolability
or international borders, Simonovic said.
According to him, Belgrade authorities were abusing the presence of
the UN to postpone the establishment of complete control by
Croatian authorities over the Croatian territory which Yugoslavia
had occupied at one time.
Simonovic said UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan was too timidly
advising Belgrade authorities to finally accept the Konfin and
Debeli Brijeg border crossings which were opened according to an
agreement between Croatian and Montenegrin authorities.
He stressed that if normalisation of life and movement of civilians
on Prevlaka was a violation of UN resolutions, then the resolutions
needed changing, not preventing life.
Croatia is insisting on support from the Security Council to the
expansion of the freedom of movement and civilian use of the entire
Prevlaka area. UNMOP's presence is restricted exclusively to the
control of the respect of demilitarisation of the area, and is
therefore, acceptable to Croatia, until further notice, Simonovic
said.
