NEW YORK, Oct 7 (Hina) - The dispute between the United States and
France on an issue of no importance for Croatia is hindering
Croatia's access into the World Trade Organisation, Croatian
diplomats warned at the 54th session of the UN General Assembly in
New York Wednesday.
Permanent Croatian representative to the UN, Ivan Simonovic,
attended the plenary session during a discussion on the
implementation of conclusions of the global social summit. He used
the opportunity to warn about "unjustified obstacles" hindering
Croatia's accession into the WTO.
Simonovic did not specifically mention the United States and France
and their dispute over audio-visual services which is affecting
Croatia, but said two big countries, members of the WTO were
disputing over the issue.
He recalled the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) last year
decided that a liberalisation of trade was necessary, as well as a
transparent and equal multilateral trade system.
"Fabricated and wilful obstacles to (Croatia's) access set by
certain countries are in grave contrast to such stances," Simonovic
said.
Advisor at the Croatian Mission to the UN, Ivan Nimac, spoke at the
committee for economic and financial issues about the same issue.
He said, among other things, that it was important for the dispute
surrounding audio-visual services to be resolved before the WTO
ministerial conference in Seattle at the end of November.
Simonovic informed the UN General Assembly about what Croatia had
done to implement the summit conclusions. He especially spoke about
the national employment policy and the promotion of equality in
social rights.
