In one of the biggest and cruellest sea battles of the Middle Ages,
in the conflict between the fleets of Venice and Genoa on September
7, 1298, in front of the town of Korcula, the great Venetian
traveller and explorer, originating from Korcula, Marco Polo, was
taken prisoner.
Lectures were held in Korcula Monday evening to mark the
anniversary of the battle. The event was organised by the Korcula
tourist association and the international 'Marco Polo' centre.
The event was attended by representatives of Mediterranean
countries, including Croatia, and was financed by the European
Union and the UNESCO
According to the director of the international centre of Croatian
Universities in Dubrovnik, Ivana Burjelaz, the 'Marco Polo'
project aims at establishing better cooperation between European
countries particularly those on the Mediterranean Sea.
Marzollo pointed to the political meaning of the project.
