Commemorative stamp in honour of Rudjer Boskovic to be issued by Vatican

ROME/ZAGREB, Aug 15 (Hina) - The Vatican's Philatelic and Numismatic Office is planning to issue the stamp in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Ruder Josip Boskovic, a Jesuit and renowned Croatian scientist, poet and theologian, the Croatian Catholic News Agency (IKA) reported

The commemorative stamp will be issued in cooperation with the Croatian Post on 13 September in 150,000 copies.

The issuance of the commemorative stamp with the image of Boskovic, who was born in Dubrovnik on 18 May 1711, has been commented on by Pope Benedict XVI. During his visit to Croatia this June, the pontiff said that Jesuit Boskovic "is a good illustration of the happy symbiosis of faith and scholarship, each stimulating the other through research that is at the same time open, diversified and capable of synthesis".

Boskovic developed foundational ideas about atoms, fields, and other areas of physics. He also contributed to astronomy, architecture, and arts. The crater Boscovich on the Moon is named in his honour. He died on 13 February 1787 in Milan.
