SWEDISH GENERAL VISITS E. CROATIAN MINE-CLEARED RECREATION AREA

SLAVONSKI BROD, Aug 17 (Hina) - The commander of Sweden's engineering centre and mine-clearing expert Brigadier General Bjorn Svenson on Tuesday visited the mined-cleared area of Poloj, a recreation area along the banks of the Sava river near Slavonski Brod, eastern Croatia. The first stage in the demining of the area was recently completed thanks to the efforts of the Croatian Mine-Clearing Centre in cooperation with Zagreb-based company "a.b.c.d." Svenson told reporters after touring the area he had come to Croatia to acquaint Swedish deminers working in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Kosovo with Croatia's experience in the field. Croatia's experts in mine-clearing are excellent, said Svenson, who is on a two-day visit to Croatia, as part of which he will also visit the Sunja area, central Croatia. Mine-clearing in the Poloj recreation area began in May and to date, some 80,000 square metres

Mine-clearing in the Poloj recreation area began in May and to date, some 80,000 square metres have been demined. According to Nenad Babler, head of the pyrotechnists at "a.b.c.d.", further mine- clearing will be very demanding given the high number of mines believed to be planted in the area and the fact that it is from time to time flooded by the Sava river.
