ZAGREB, July 15 (Hina) - After many years I have finally managed to come to Croatia and I am very happy because of that, famous American actor Armand Assante, who arrived in Croatia to support the campaign against antipersonnel mines,
told a press conference in Zagreb on Thursday. I have just returned from Sunja, about 80 kilometres southeast of Zagreb, where a mine removal process is being conducted at the Sunja railway station. Mine removal is a very expensive and slow process, and Croatia will need several billion dollars for it, Assante said and added he would, upon his arrival in the United States, inform the US president's advisor for mine removal issues of the situation in Croatia.

Armand Assante, known by his roles in "The Mambo Kings" and "Hoffa"
as well as "Napoleon and Josephine: A Love Story", is also engaged
in the Landminers Survivors Network, and has devoted a lot of his
time to a struggle against this dangerous weapon.
The actor said he has been actively participating in the campaign
after he was introduced to a landmine victim. Assante said mines
were a global problem of extreme measures, adding that one person in
the world dies from a landmine every 20 minutes.
Assante's new movie "The Hunley" premiered several days ago in
London. The movie is based on a true story which took place in the
U.S. Civil War and tackles the invention of the first submarine.
Assante plays a commander of the submarine.
The actor announced to his fans in Croatia he was preparing two new
projects; biographies of the French Post-Impressionist, Paul
Gauguin, and American writer Edgar Allan Poe.
After 31 years of theatre and movie experience, the American actor
of Italian-Irish background believes that acting is not a
profession which should be recommended.
Assante said that due to his financial situation in the past, he
made movies in his career he was not particularly proud of. Now,
however, it is important to me that a movie I am in has a certain
moral message, Assante added.
The visit of the fifty-years-old actor was organised by the Miss
Universe Croatia licensee, Vladimir Kraljevic.
Assante is also scheduled to visit the southern Adriatic town of
Dubrovnik and the city of Split and the southern Croatian island of
Mljet.
