DUBROVNIK, July 8 (Hina) - A two-day international seminar titled
"From A Country in Transition to the Membership in the European
Union" opened in the southern Croatian town of Dubrovnik on
Thursday.
The event, which is attended by representatives of government
secretariats from Central and East European countries, the Baltic
states, and Cyprus and Malta, focuses on different stages of the
process of admission to the EU and specific problems encountered by
future EU members-countries currently undergoing the process of
transition.
Opening the meeting, Croatian European Integration Minister Ljerka
Mintas-Hodak said the Ministry for European Integration had just
completed a plan of Croatia's admission to the EU, which described
the country's current position regarding its admission.
This entails in the first place the fulfilment of political
conditions, said Mintas-Hodak. "I believe this is the easier part,
whereas the reform of the economic structure, legal adjustment and
the establishment of institutions necessary to make those
adjustments function will be a much harder and longer process", she
added.
Justice Minister Zvonimir Separovic said the meeting was important
for Croatia because it had gathered the highest representatives of
almost all countries in transition which are involved in the
process of European integration.
EU's Ambassador to Croatia Per Vinther spoke about some aspects of
admission to the EU, stressing the importance of the economic and
trade development within and between regions, the democratisation
of society, education and institutionalisation, and the use of new
cooperation possibilities in various fields, the most important
ones being legislation and internal policy.
The Dubrovnik seminar is organised by the Government Office for
European Integration.
