ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - The "Zvijezda" oil factory's management
withdrew Tuesday's decision to dismiss two hundred and thirty-two
employees following the Croatian employment institute's promise
for a partial loan to assist "Agrokor's" construction of a
distribution centre which would employ the "Zvijezda" employees.
"Zvijezda" employees thereby on Wednesday abandoned their protest.
On Tuesday their protest blocked traffic on one of Zagreb's largest
intersections for over four hours.
The owner of "Agrokor", Ivica Todoric, withdrew his decision to
dismiss the employees after the director of the Employment
Institute, Sanja Crnkovic-Pozaic, promised that the institute
would arrange for a loan for the distribution centre.
Crnkovic-Pozaic became involved in negotiations between employers
and employees and promised to assist with the construction of the
distribution centre which would begin as soon as funds were made
available.
The employees which were to have been dismissed will now be employed
in the distribution centre upon its completion.
It is the union's interest that Todoric's programme to construct
the distribution centre is successful as this will not only take
care of the redundant employees from "Zvijezda" but will also
enable a further 500 new positions, said union representative
Stjepan Rogic.
In case our agreement is not adhered to and "Zvijezda" employees
were to be dismissed, the union will organise an even larger and
more radical protest than the one blocking intersections, Rogic
said.
Funds to be ensured by the Employment Institute are a smaller
portion of the 68 million German marks required by the project.
"Agrokor" will attempt to obtain the remainder of funds through
Government guarantees or some stable domestic bank, Todoric's
advisor Tomislav Ledic announced.
No one in "Agrokor" has been released as yet as redundant, reminded
Ledic, however, if we cannot ensure guarantees for loans, then the
issue of redundancy will once again become realistic.
