CROATIA AND SLOVENIA HOLD "FIRE '99" EXERCISE

RIJEKA, June 5 (Hina) - Croatian and Slovenian earth and air fire-fighting troops held an inter-state exhibit exercise "Fire '99" on the borderland between the two countries Saturday. Attending the exercise were Croatian and Slovene Interior Ministers Ivan Penic and Borut Suklje, as well as Slovene Defence Minister Franci Demsar. The exercise was held in line with an agreement signed by the two countries in Ljubljana in 1997, on a joint effort to fight natural hazard. On the Croatian side, participating were professional and volunteer fire-fighters from Rijeka, Opatija, Klana and Skalnica, members of civil defence, fire-fighting helicopters and two Canadair planes. Croatia's Penic told reporters "the complicated exercise with a lot of technical equipment was carried out very successfully, and Croatia endorses such a neighbourly cooperation".
