ZAGREB, May 28 (Hina) - On the occasion of the Day of Croatian Armed
Forces, which is celebrated on May 28, the President of the Republic
and Croatian Armed Forces' Chief Commander, Franjo Tudjman,
visited Zagreb's "Croatia" barracks, where he attended a military
exercise of the First Guard Brigade, called "Tigers".
Members of the brigade informed President Tudjman about the
history, organisation and activities of the brigade, which was
formed on October 5, 1990. The brigade took part in the most
difficult battles of the Homeland War; 364 of its members were
killed, 17 are still held missing, 186 had been imprisoned in Serb
camps and 1,711 had been wounded.
Following the exercise, President Tudjman visited the brigade's
technical-tactical corps. He then held a short speech and had lunch
with members of the brigade.
The Day of Croatian Armed Forces is celebrated on May 28, the day on
which eight years ago, members of the National Guard Corps (ZNG),
the forerunner of the Croatian Army, lined up for the first time in
front of Croatian President Franjo Tudjman.
In the line up were four units, made up of members of the Interior
Ministry's special units. In late 1991, these units became part of
the Croatian Army, in line with a decision by President Tudjman.
Although poorly armed, Croatian soldiers and police officers
thwarted the plans of Great-Serbian aggressors at the very
beginning of the aggression on Croatia. By confronting the Yugoslav
army and Serb paramilitary units, members of Croatian Armed Forces
liberated occupied Croatian regions and came out of the war as
victors. The crown of their victories was the liberation of the
occupied Croatian areas in Operations "Flash" and "Storm" in 1995.
The Croatian Armed Forces developed along with the state. Today,
their active component includes 34,167 members. Of that number,
19,507 are members of guard brigades. Currently, 25,643 persons are
serving the army.
Following their peace-time reorganisation, the Croatian Armed
Forces are close to entering Euro-Atlantic military associations.
