ZAPRESIC, May 23 (Hina) - On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the death of a famous Croatian Ban (Viceroy), Josip Jelacic, Croatian President Franjo Tudjman's representative, Nedjeljko Mihanovic, and the Sabor's
representative, Ivica Gazi, laid wreaths at the Jelacic family vault in Zapresic, outside Zagreb, on Sunday. Speaking about the important political and military work of this Croatian Ban (1801-1859), Mihanovic described Jelacic as a symbol of the national freedom and sound nationalism. "Jelacic was the most energetic mind of the Croatian national revival," Mihanovic added. A MP, Ivica Gazi, described Ban Jelacic as a guardian of the Croatian history. Today a commemorative service was held in the St. Joseph Chapel in Zapresic where Jelacic had been buried when he had died in 1859. His remains were transferred to the family vault in 1992.
