SECURITY ON CROATIAN ROADS IMPROVED - PENIC

ZAGREB, April 13 (Hina) - Croatian Interior Minister Ivan Penic and his assistant Josko Moric on Tuesday visited the exhibition space of the interior ministry at the "Auto Show" at the Zagreb Fair. Commenting on the current situation in the traffic, Penic said the security and safety on Croatian roads had improved last year. 1998 saw less traffic accidents and road deaths than 1997. One of the reasons for such a positive trend, Penic believes, was the implementation of the national programme for traffic security that has been conducted since 1995. During its conduct the road deaths dropped from 1,300 in 1990 to 646 last year. In 1998, the entire traffic included an increasing number of newly registered cars and new drivers. The construction of roads was being continued, and the traffic in the Croatian Danube River Area was reintegrated into a single system of police control.(hina) jn ms
