ZAGREB, March 26 (Hina) - Illiquidity, business with risk of a part
of Croatian banks, too high public expenditure and the growth of
unemployment are priority economic problems in need of urgent
solution to maintain the economic and social stability of the
country, the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)
representatives said at a news conference on Friday.
The state will impose itself as a source of financial discipline, MP
Djuro Njavro stressed.
Ministries will no longer be able to assume expenses which are not
previously granted by the Finance Ministry.
The legal system will also play a great role in the economic
turning, Njavro said.
According to him, it is necessary to sustain the faith of clients in
Croatian banks, and the state will guarantee citizens' savings
investments in banks which are under bankruptcy proceedings.
The state leadership advocates that Croatia this year becomes a
member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), to speed up the
increase of its exports and a number of measures are being prepared
to make Croatia an attractive country for foreign investments,
Njavro said.
Finance Minister Borislav Skegro stressed the protection of banks'
clients would additionally burden the state budget, so a re-balance
of the state budget will have to be found.
HDZ spokesman Ivica Ropus relayed the party's stance regarding the
NATO military action against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Such an action for the HDZ is a logical consequence of the Yugoslav
authorities' ignoring of international community's peaceful
solution for Kosovo. However, it is in Croatia's interest that the
situation in the region be stabilised.
It is also the stance of the HDZ, Ropus said, that Croatia will not
extradite its Generals to the International Criminal Tribunal for
the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), if indictments are issued against
them.
