NEW YORK, March 19 (Hina) - The permanent representative of the
Republic of Croatia to the United Nations, Ivan Simonovic,
forwarded a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, expressing
dissatisfaction and regret about the lack of progress in
negotiations between Croatia and the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia concerning the Prevlaka peninsula.
"It is with profound disappointment that I have to report that the
FR Yugoslavia has demonstrated once again, an in clear terms, that
it continues to harbour territorial claims against the Republic of
Yugoslavia," Simonovic said in his letter.
He informed Annan about the contents of a letter forwarded by
Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic to his Yugoslav counterpart
Zivadin Jovanovic.
Simonovic also warned that following the adoption of a resolution
of the UN Security Council this January, only one meeting was held
between the two countries' delegations about the issue.
He reiterated Croatia's stance that the issue of Prevlaka can be
solved permanently via the demilitarisation of the whole Prevlaka
range.
"The situation along the southern most border between the Republic
of Croatia and the FRY remains stable," Simonovic stressed.
He added that the two border-crossings at Debeli Brijeg and Konfin,
on the border with Montenegro, have been opened permanently, in
agreement with Montenegro, and are operational.
"In the wake of the upcoming tourist season, (...) it is essential
to allow free movement of civilians throughout the entire territory
on both sides of the international border and over the border
crossing points, and thus make another important step towards the
full normalisation of relations," Simonovic said in his letters.
