ZAGREB, March 7 (Hina) - Croats outside Croatia should have their
deputies to the Croatian National Parliament (Sabor), said
representatives of the Croatian World Congress (HSK) at Sunday's
news conference in Zagreb.
Congress officials held the press conference after the regular
annual session of the HSK main committee which took place in Zagreb
from Friday to Sunday behind the closed doors.
A list (of Croatian MPs) for the Diaspora is a bridge between the
homeland and Croats who live in other countries. Croats throughout
the world would feel abandoned by their fatherland in case the list
for the Diaspora should be abolished, said Friar Simun Sito Coric,
the president of the Croatian World Congress, which is the umbrella
organisation of Croat emigrants.
According to the Congress' figures, there are about 3.5 million
people of Croat descent in some 60 countries all over the world.
Coric maintained that discussions on the "Diaspora List" should
revolve around issues how to elect right persons who can speak about
the Diaspora's problems at Sabor. A decision on a procedure for the
election and the number of Croat emigrants' representatives to
Sabor should be made by the state authorities in Croatia, he added.
The Congress' representatives conveyed the special concern of the
Croatian Diaspora over the situation in Croatia's banking system.
At the Zagreb session, the Congress main committee concluded that
the State should not allow that emigrants and other citizens who had
confidence in this State and deposited their money in some Croatian
banks be affected by such situation.
The committee also concluded that the State should pay more
attention to possibilities of emigrants' investments in Croatia
and to the protection of their saving deposits in certain Croatian
banks.
It proposed the establishment a committee in charge of the Croatian
Diaspora which would oversee the work of state bodies which also
tackle the issues in connection with Croatians outside Croatia.
