ZAGREB, March 4 (Hina) - Upon the request by the president of the
panel of judges in the trial of Dinko Sakic, a commander of the
Jasenovac concentration camp during World War II, two expert
witnesses-physicians submitted a report on Sakic's condition on
Thursday.
On the basis of the report, submitted by the head of the Institute
for Forensics, Dr Dusan Zecevic, and a neurologist, Dr Stjepan
Voeglein, the trail of Dinko Sakic was postponed for March 15, to
begin at 9.30am before the Zagreb County Court panel of judges.
"I believe that at the moment, his condition is not such as to allow
him to continue participating in the trial", said Dr Zecevic.
He added that "due to the defendant's condition, which still has not
been stabilised, any further proceedings, in which he may
participate, could endanger his condition and even his life".
Despite the medications he was taking, Sakic's condition had not
improved considerably, Zecevic said asking that the trial be
postponed by at least eight to ten days, so that experts could
follow his condition, of which they would regularly inform the
panel.
Dr Voeglein said that today's examination had confirmed "changes,
more intensive than those of March 2, to Sakic's neurological
status". "From the neurological point of view I can conclude that
what occurred on March 2 was a sudden disturbance in the blood flow
to the central nervous system, which has resulted in mild changes",
Voglein said, adding there were indications that the process was
still ongoing.
Answering to an objection by the County State Attorney Radovan
Santek, who said that "Dr Zecevic's opinion somewhat differs from
that of Dr Voeglein", Zecevic said that their opinions differed
only on the surface. The decision that Sakic is not able to continue
taking part in the trial was made jointly "since today's
neurological findings are more serious that those from his medical
documentation", said Zecevic.
Both the defence and the prosecution agreed to the postponement.
The trial will resume on March 15, at 9.30am before the Zagreb
County Court panel of judges.
