ZAGREB, Jan 31 (Hina) - Retired Croatian army general Nijaz Batlak, better known as Mate Sarlija Daidza, died in Zagreb on Sunday. Batlak was born on March 15, 1929, in Cavtat, southern Croatia. After World War II was completed and
Communist forces seized power in the former Yugoslavia, Batlak emigrated abroad. Following the establishment of Croatia's independence, Batlak returned to Croatia at the invitation of Croatian President Franjo Tudjman and joined Croatian armed forces as a volunteer. He distinguished himself in military operations in southern Croatia and was promoted to the rank of major general by President Tudjman for his exceptional military achievements. (hina) rml
