ZAGREB, Dec 31 (Hina) - As of January 1, 2001, a new, lower customs
tariff will begin to be implemented, an agreement on textile trade
with the EU will come into effect, as well as the agreement on free
trade between Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Prior to Croatia's full membership in the World Trade Organisation
Croatia passed a new law on customs tariffs for industrial products
which came into effect on July 1 and for agricultural products and
foodstuffs on November 30, on the date Croatia became full member of
the WTO.
According to an agreement with the WTO, it is Croatia's commitment
to pass a new, lower customs tariff each year, which is decreed by
the Government.
The start of the new millennium also brings about more favourable
conditions for the textile industry for exporting onto EU markets.
On January 1 the agreement on textile will come into effect,
relieving textile exports to EU countries from customs and quantity
restrictions. The importance of this agreement is evident in the
fact that Croatia exports in average about half a billion dollars
worth of textile products to the EU market per annum.
The start of next year is also the start of implementation of a free
trade agreement between Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The
agreement, which was signed 12 days ago, stipulates Croatia's
complete opening up its market to industrial and agricultural
produce from Bosnia-Herzegovina (with a zero tariff rate), while
Bosnia-Herzegovina will decrease customs tariffs for importing
products from Croatia.
As of the very beginning of next year, customs tariffs for products
originating from Croatia will be lowered by 30 per cent, 40 per cent
at the beginning of 2002, 60 per cent in 2003, to reach zero level at
the beginning of 2004 .
