ZAGREB, Dec 21 (Hina) - One of the leading Croatian and European linguists, academician Rudolf Filipovic, died at the age of 85 in Zagreb on Wednesday. Filipovic was born in 1916 in Zlatar. In 1940, he graduated from Zagreb's Faculty
of Philosophy, English language department. In 1961 he became a professor at the faculty and the head of the English language department. He is the author of the English-Croatian Encyclopaedic Dictionary, whose first edition was released in 1956 and which since has seen 22 editions. He also wrote a number of books and scientific papers. Filipovic is one of the founders of the Faculty of Philosophy's Linguistics Institute and was the faculty dean from 1972 to 1974.
