OSIJEK, Dec 15 (Hina) - The county state prosecutor's office in the
eastern town of Osijek on Friday received criminal charges against
four persons suspected of economic crimes during 1993's
privatisation of local daily paper Glas Slavonije.
The county state prosecutor's office has until Monday to decide if
the charges are founded and if it will seek stripping two suspects
of immunity, Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) MP Branimir Glavas and
Judge Petar Kljajic.
In 1993, Glavas had been chairman of the board at Glas Slavonije and
Kljajic assembly president of the National Stockholders
Association (NDU), which had been established by HDZ's Osijek town
committee.
The other two suspects are Zelimir Mestrovic, then director of NDU,
and Ivan Simic, Glas Slavonije's director.
Glavas today issued a press release, saying this was a "politically
rigged process" and that the official record of his statement to the
police had been "falsified."
"If the state prosecutor's office confirms the criminal charges and
launches an investigation, I will prove my innocence in court. The
'suspicious' privatisation of Glas Slavonije is only an excuse and
the beginning of the prosecution of those who created and defended
Croatia under general international embargo," said Glavas. He
added the incumbent authorities needed to accuse the formerly
ruling HDZ to appease the public.
