PM RACAN HOPEFUL TODAY'S STRIKE "WON'T LAST INDEFINITELY"

ZAGREB, Dec 14 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivica Racan said on Thursday he hoped today's strike in public services would proceed in order and "not last indefinitely." Participation in the strike will not be paid from the state budget, he said at the beginning of today's government session. Racan stressed the government's position had been strongly defended during yesterday's negotiations with the unions. He said the strike was a democratic right which the government respected. He added had told the ministers to ensure an undisturbed holding of the strike, but also of work of public interest. Racan reiterated the government's desire to arrive at a salary policy in the medium-term period. We will continue to insist on dialogue with social partners, and there is no reason why it should not be achieved in the economic and general interest, he said.
