ZAGREB, Dec 5 (Hina) - A German media group, WAZ, has announced it would hire internationally-recognised independent legal eagles to make enquiries into the legal regularity of Monday night's apprehension of the chairman of the Europa
Press Holding media company management board, Ninoslav Pavic. Although admitting it was not briefed in all details of Pavic's arrest, WAZ expressed doubts about the legality of the procedure, considering the fact the entire action had been "fabricated by a newly-founded competition newspaper (Republika)". From the aspect of a law-based state, the contentious action against Pavic is surprising, since Pavic and Europa Press Holding had in their issues, especially the daily newspaper Jutarnji list, spurred democratic changes in Croatia, a statement signed by the director and co-owner of WAZ, Erich Schumann, claims. ZAGREB, Dec 5 (Hina) - A German media group, WAZ, has announced it
would hire internationally-recognised independent legal eagles to
make enquiries into the legal regularity of Monday night's
apprehension of the chairman of the Europa Press Holding media
company management board, Ninoslav Pavic.
Although admitting it was not briefed in all details of Pavic's
arrest, WAZ expressed doubts about the legality of the procedure,
considering the fact the entire action had been "fabricated by a
newly-founded competition newspaper (Republika)".
From the aspect of a law-based state, the contentious action
against Pavic is surprising, since Pavic and Europa Press Holding
had in their issues, especially the daily newspaper Jutarnji list,
spurred democratic changes in Croatia, a statement signed by the
director and co-owner of WAZ, Erich Schumann, claims. Schumann says
the EPH urged all its reporters to follow "the foundations of
democracy, of a law-based state and human rights".
Under the law, all people, including Pavic, are innocent until
proven guilty, the statement said.
Schumann asserted WAZ had, in buying a part of the EPH in 1998,
performed the regular thorough review of the company's business and
found no irregularities. Neither then, nor now, has there been any
evidence to point to any incorrect business acts before WAZ's
introduction into EPH.
In its first issue, the Republika daily on Monday published a copy
of an illegal partnership contract signed by media and political
magnates, Ninoslav Pavic, Miroslav Kutle, Vinko Grubisic and Ivic
Pasalic, aimed at controlling Croatian media.
