OSIJEK, Nov 23 (Hina) - Five of 13 Croatian Serbs suspected of war
crimes against civilians in eastern Croatia were released on
Thursday.
Based on a Supreme Court decision, the Osijek County Court
reconsidered its decision on the extension of custody, which began
on Nov. 6, and which the defence appealed because it was made for the
entire group instead of considering each case separately.
The county court concluded that for the five suspects, there was no
longer danger that they might influence witnesses or escape, and
that witnesses had not recognised them.
For the other eight, detention has been extended until Jan. 6 owing
to the possibility of influencing witnesses, disturbing the
public, and the emotional strain of the victims of war, especially
those who lost their dearest. The eight are charged with serious war
crimes.
A 14th suspect, arrested a few days after the other 13, also remains
in custody as the Supreme Court did not even consider his appeal.
