LIVNO, Nov 14 (Hina) - A spokesman for the interior ministry of
Bosnia-Herzegovina's Herzeg-Bosnia Canton on Tuesday dismissed
claims by a spokesman for international police forces in the
country that large amounts of illegal weapons had been discovered
in police stations in Livno, Tomislavgrad, Kupres and Glamoc during
a routine check-up last Friday.
Spokesman Drasko Dalic stressed the Stabilisation Force and the
International Police Task Force (IPTF) had discovered the weapons
which the cantonal interior ministry had already collected from
citizens in a previous operation and which were registered with the
IPTF.
Dalic told reporters in Livno that IPTF and SFOR members had seized
the weapons and other equipment which were part of administrative,
petty offence or criminal proceedings.
Also seized were parts of automatic rifles and equipment which were
stored in a BH Federation Army warehouse in Livno in line with an
agreement between the IPTF, SFOR, the Croat component of the
Federation Army and the cantonal interior ministry.
"The background of the IPTF/SFOR operation is Croat national
insignia in Herzeg-Bosnia Canton, which is a political and not a
police problem," said the head of the cantonal interior minister's
office, Petar Buljan.
He added that October 31 had been the final deadline for the removal
of national insignia in the canton. The deadline has passed and the
insignia have not been removed nor will they be removed without a
decision by the cantonal assembly, said Buljan, recalling that the
president of the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia-Herzegovina
(HDZ BiH), Ante Jelavic, had supported the displaying of national
insignia in the canton.
