With the average monthly income of 1,945 kuna per capita, this
amount covers just some 67 percent of the personal consumption in
the three-member family, while the coverage in Austria and Italy is
86 and 80 percent respectively or 84 and in neighbouring Slovenia,
or even 99 percent in Hungary.
This was cited in conclusions of research which the Croatian
Chamber of Commerce (HGK) conducted in 953 households throughout
the country in June.
This study, which the Chamber of Commerce presented a few days ago,
was a pilot project aimed at establishing how Croatian citizens
were living. It was carried out in line with a methodology applied
in most countries in transition.
The study includes an analysis of the personal consumption and
subsistence level in Croatia compared with those items in six
countries in transition and 16 European Union member-states.
The average Croatian family has 3.14 members, and the monthly
income per household is 6,106 kuna.
The structure of the entire income shows that the biggest sources of
funds are salary (71.3 percent) and pension (13.9).
According to the structure of the consumption, 570 kuna per capita
or 35.2 percent (of the family's income) is earmarked for food and
non-alcoholic drinks. The housing, water, power and gas supplies
account for 11 percent of costs, clothes and footwear some eight (8)
percent, transport 10 percent, and education 1.8 percent.
Of the total personal consumption, even 63.5 percent refers to the
barest necessities (subsistence level) with 1034 kuna (258.5
German marks) per member of family.
These necessities include food, drinking, housing costs, water and
power supplies as well as costs for regular maintenance of the
household.
The average salary in Croatia is 830 German marks.
During the presentation of the study, the Chamber's head, Nadan
Vidosevic, said the results of the research had shown that the
Croatian economy was in a stalemate. The average salary is among
higher compared to the situation in other countries in transition,
but the standard of a majority of Croatian citizens was lower in
comparison to inhabitants in other countries.
In the last five and a half years costs of living rose by 30 percent,
he added.
