Tudjman says will comply with subpoena for interview with Karadzic's defence team

ZAGREB, July 15 (Hina) - Miroslav Tudjman, a former director of the Croatian Intelligence Service (HIS), has said that he will respond to the invitation for an interview with the legal adviser of the wartime Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic, accused by the ICTY tribunal of genocide, if he receives the binding order for this purpose from the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

"If it is a subpoena, then I have no choice and I will have to comply," Tudjman told Hina on Friday, adding that he had not yet received any official notification but read about that on web portals.

The UN tribunal has reported that the tribunal's trial chamber has granted the motion by Karadzic for an interview with the son of the first Croatian president and ordered to the Croatian government to see to it that Tudjman be interviewed by Karadzic's legal advisor.

According to the ICTYs' decision, Karadzic claims that Tudjman "is particularly well placed to reveal what documents exist which reflect the agreement with Iran to ship arms to the Bosnian Muslims, the acquiescence of the United States and other United Nations Member States, the opening up of naval or air routes which had been blockaded, the use of humanitarian convoys to smuggle the arms into (BiH), and the nature and amount of arms which were smuggled into (BiH) during 1994-1995."

Miroslav Tudjman said that the wartime Bosnian Serb leader would presumably stick to his claims that the United States was included in providing arms to the Muslims and that Croatia allowed the shipments of arms which ended up in Srebrenica.

"I can only say that i was at the helm of an agency that collected information from abroad and did not control activities of either Croatian institutions or Croatian citizens," Tudjman said.

Deciding on the subpoena, the trial chamber said that "attempts by the Accused to interview Miroslav Tudjman on a voluntary basis have now come to a stalemate" and that information which Karadzic may obtain from the interview with Tudjman could be relevant to his trial and his defence.

Karadzic is standing trial before the ICTY for genocide in Srebrenica and 43-month-long siege of the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo.
