ZAGREB, Oct 31 (Hina) - After three unsuccessful attempts and
delays of main hearings, a trial against members of the so-called
criminal organisation started in the Zagreb district prison of
Remetinec Tuesday by the reading of an indictment.#L#
The indictment, read by deputy county state prosecutor Janjko
Grlic, was changed in relation to the original one referring to 18
indictees. Given that one indictee expressed remorse for the crimes
he had committed and decided to cooperate, and three indictees have
been exempt from the proceedings, the prosecution decided to amend
the indictment and leave out the crimes they were accused of.
Now, 14 indictees are tried, of whom the forth indictee, Zoran
Pripuz is on the run. On over 200 pages of the indictment, the 14
persons are accused of forming a crime organisation, five murders,
four murder attempts, extortion, drug dealing, fraud, violent
behaviour, etc.
According to the indictment, 12 persons are indicted for forming
the criminal organisation in 1990, while the first indictee, Nikica
Jelavic, is indicted for being the head of the organisation after
the murder of Zlatko Bagaric in July, 1998. The prosecution holds
Jelavic responsible for all criminal activities committed since
July 1998.
The persons are indicted for a total of five murders, including the
murder of Zoran Dominij, who happened to be passing during a murder
attempt, five murder attempts, encouraging others to murder,
causing severe injuries to one person, bringing the life of one
person in danger, extortion and a robbery. Four indictees are also
indicted for drug dealing.
