OSIJEK, Oct 12 (Hina) - Marko Varzic will be brought before the
Osijek County Court on Thursday for killing a famous Croatian
athlete and official of the Croatian Olympic Committee, Matija
Ljubek, a Croatian Army officer Ante Bungic and wounding Bungic's
wife Katica, county police reported.
Matija Ljubek, 47, was killed in Valpovo (eastern Croatia) at about
07.50 pm Wednesday. According to a report issued by Osijek-Baranja
county police Varzic shot Matija Ljubek to death, and then left for
Belisce where he also shot Ante Bungic to death and wounded his wife
Katica.
According to information at hand, Varzic is the brother-in-law to
both the men killed, and his motive were unsolved property rights
issues in the wider family, county police spokesman Josip Begovic
told a news conference Thursday.
Autopsies will be carried out at the Osijek hospital today, while
doctors are still fighting for the life if Katica Bungic.
The tragedy began around 8pm Wednesday with the suspect waiting
outside a house where Ljubek and his 22-year old son were paying a
visit.
Varzic fired two shots from an M-48 gun towards Matija Ljubek,
killing him instantly, and one shot towards Ljubek's son,
fortunately missing.
Varzic then got into his car and left for Belisce, to the house of
Ante Bungic (1956). From the terrace he shot through an open door
into the living room of the house where Bungic was watching
television. Shot in the thorax, Bungic died immediately. The other
billet caught Katica Bungic in the stomach.
Begovic informed reporters a police patrol caught up with the
suspect on the road between Valpovo and Belisce and apprehended him
without resistance.
The semiautomatic rifle used in the shootings was found in the car,
as well as two hand grenades.
Charges will be levelled against him for murder and the illegal
holding of weapons and explosives.
The police spokesman said police had on September 13 intervened
against the suspect when he abused Ljubek's mother in the family
house.
There is as yet no information about whether the suspect had been
psychologically treated nor whether he had been previously
reported for threatening the killed persons or illegal possession
of weapons, Begovic said, adding had police known about his
possession of weapons, they would have acted accordingly.
