Opening the congress, which is attended by some 2,000 experts from
82 countries, Mesic said the congress was a special event for
Croatia and its capital because it was one of the major
international meetings held in Croatia as an independent country.
Although we are a small country, we are known for ultrasound, Mesic
said. The idea to establish the International Association for
Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) originated in
Croatia ten years ago and diagnostic ultrasound certainly
represents technological progress linking the past and the new
millennium, Mesic said.
One of the main topics to be discussed at the congress is three-
dimensional ultrasound as the latest method in the clinical
application of ultrasound, which is what Croatian scientists have
become known for.
The chairman of the organisation committee, Prof. Dr. Asim Kurjak
expressed satisfaction with the large number of participants, who
are to deliver 493 lectures during the four-day meeting.
The participants were also welcomed by Health Minister Ana
Stavljenic Rukavina.
Opening speeches were also delivered by ISUOG president Dr. Sturla
Eik-Nes and the founder of the ISUOG, Stuart Campbell.
The congress was organised by the ISUOG, Croatian Academy of
Sciences and Arts, Croatian Academy of Medical Science, Croatian
Ultrasound Society, and the general hospital 'Sveti duh' from
Zagreb.
