ZAGREB, Sept 29 (Hina) - The decision of Croatian President Stipe
Mesic on retiring seven active generals (who signed an open letter
to the Croatian public on Thursday), "is a decision which will
deepen, and not solve the rift and deep social misunderstanding
within the Croatian nation", former Defence Minister Andrija
Hebrang told Hina Friday.
He said that the act of the generals was not a political act and
added they should not be exposed to sanctions.
"Twelve generals addressed the public with an aim to express their
dissatisfaction about the negative presentation of the Homeland
Defence War, the tarnishing of the reputation of Croatian officers
and a series of moves by the new authorities, which have led to the
diminishing of Croatian national pride to which every nation is
entitled," Hebrang said.
He added he did not refer to extreme forms of right-wing expression,
also known as nationalism, but primarily to those who paid honour to
all events which represent the foundation of a state.
"In our country, those foundations are seriously jeopardised, and
the generals reacted in an unusual way", Hebrang stressed.
"Such a decision made by the President of the Republic will deepen
and not solve the social misunderstandings within the Croatian
nation", Hebrang concluded.
Mesic today decided to retire seven active army generals who were
among the 12 signatories of yesterday's open letter in which they
called on state institutions and the media to oppose the negative
and false presentation of the Homeland Defence War, Croatia's early
1990s war of independence from the former Yugoslav federation.
