Lt. Col. Kenneth Glueck and commander Tihomir Erceg were
particularly pleased with the fact that the exercise on the U.S.
warship Austin saw Croatian military aircraft land on the Austin,
the first time in history that a U.S. warship welcomed the military
aircraft of a non-NATO member-state.
The exercise, the "conquering" of Zirje island, involved 450 U.S.
marines and 250 members of the Croatian army's fourth guard
brigade, with back-up from the air and two MIG Croatian aircraft, as
well as several military helicopters from both states, and Croatian
navy ships.
This was the first time that all three sections of the Croatian army
had taken part in an exercise at the same time.
After successfully conquering and performing tasks on Zirje, the
military helicopters took the U.S. marines and the Croatian
soldiers to Kukuzovac near Sinj, where the exercise resumes.
