ZAGREB, Aug 9 (Hina) - The construction of 2,000 buildings will be
completed entirely this year whereas another 2,640 buildings will
be roofed. This means that 640 buildings more will be reconstructed
this year in relation to last year, the Minister of Public Works,
Reconstruction and Construction Radimir Cacic, told reporters on
Wednesday.
It is very likely that another 1,000 buildings will be included in
the reconstruction programme, which means 1,500 more reconstructed
houses than last year, Cacic said, commenting on a letter forwarded
on Tuesday by the Croatian Association of Returnees (ZPH), which is
dissatisfied with the 2000 reconstruction programme.
Cacic believes reconstruction and construction works have never
been more intensive and considers the ZPH statement 'political
dirt' which he did not expect from the organisation he believed was
above politics.
He dismissed the claim by the ZPH president that there were no
foreign donations for reconstruction this year, adding foreign
donations this year would amount to DM50 million.
Of that amount, 45 have already been realised and the Swiss
government will soon start implementing a DM three-million-worth
programme of reconstruction in the southern town of Knin. To this
another DM10 million of assistance approved by US Congress
yesterday should be added, he said.
Asked how many more buildings should be repaired, Cacic said it was
not known as reconstruction was a continual process.
For the time being we know that about 16,000 facilities should be
reconstructed, but new reconstruction requests continue arriving,
especially from the Croatian Danube region, he said.
Reconstruction has been stepped up this year but it should be
further accelerated so that the process could be completed by the
end of this government's mandate, he added.
Cacic also commented on media claims regarding the construction of
flats for soldiers. This year, 1,500 flats for soldiers will be
built, which is 500 flats more than in any previous year. The
ministry will keep that pace next year as well, Cacic said.
