Zdenkovac residents recall that about 50 years ago one of their
fellow villagers had brought home two sequoia seedlings from a
greenhouse in Djakovo. One of the two trees was cut down in the
meantime and the other grew to some 20 metres.
In the early 19th century, the famous English travel writer and
naturalist John Bidwell described these gigantic trees in the
trunks of which Indians carved tunnels, through which a cavalry
could pass. Bidwell found the monumental trees in California, in
the area of Sierra Nevada, at the height of 2,000 metres above sea-
level. The area is today a national park.
Trees in these sequoia woods grow to a fantastic height of 135
metres and their bark is 75 centimetres thick. Sequoiadendron
giganteam is one of the tallest and most beautiful plants in
botanical gardens all over the world, including Croatia.
