UMAG, July 23 (Hina) - During his Sunday visit to Umag, in the north
Adriatic region of Istria, Croatian President Stipe Mesic met
Istria County Prefect Stevo Zufic, Umag Mayor Vlado Kraljevic, and
the president of the Umag town council and head of the Italian
union, Giuseppe Rota.
After the meeting, which was held behind closed doors, President
Mesic said the talks focused on trans-border cooperation and the
cooperation with neighbouring cities and counties.
The officials also discussed the possible continuation of the
treatment of patients from the Buje area in the hospital in Izola,
Slovenia. Mesic believes this problem can be solved with agreements
between the two countries and their health institutions.
He said the current ATP tour in Umag is an ideal combination of sport
and vacationing.
Commenting on the course of the tourist season so far, Mesic
expressed satisfaction with the increased tourist turnover.
Asked to comment on the recent dispute between the leaders of the
Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Croatian Social Liberal Party
(HSLS), Ivica Racan and Drazen Budisa respectively, Mesic said the
conflict had been blown out of all proportion.
Speaking about the most difficult problems of today's Croatia,
Mesic said those were unemployment, non-activated resources, the
illegal transfer of the Croatian capital into foreign countries,
and the slow processing of numerous scandals. He therefore expects
the government to offer a framework which would guarantee safety
for foreign capital.
Continuing his visit to Umag, President Mesic met the director of
the ATP tour 'Croatia open', Slavko Rasberger, expressing his
support for events such as Umag ATP tour, Formula 1 races at Grobnik
and the promotion of golf in Istria.
After his talks with the county and municipal officials, Mesic
watched the final match of this year's ATP tour with Prime Minister
Ivica Racan and his associates.
