NEW YORK, June 8 (Hina) - Addressing a U.N. General Assembly's extraordinary session on women on Wednesday in New York, Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Zeljka Antunovic stressed the importance of education in eliminating gender
stereotypes as well as the need to improve women's labour equality and their position in society in general. The largest part of Antunovic's speech was dedicated to the position of women in Croatia. She cited positive examples of greater participation of women in Croatia's political life, to which almost all parties are contributing by putting up more women as their electoral candidates. Antunovic also believes the possible valuable contribution of women in the process of reconciliation and dealing with the consequences of conflicts is not sufficiently used. NEW YORK, June 8 (Hina) - Addressing a U.N. General Assembly's
extraordinary session on women on Wednesday in New York, Croatian
Deputy Prime Minister Zeljka Antunovic stressed the importance of
education in eliminating gender stereotypes as well as the need to
improve women's labour equality and their position in society in
general.
The largest part of Antunovic's speech was dedicated to the
position of women in Croatia. She cited positive examples of
greater participation of women in Croatia's political life, to
which almost all parties are contributing by putting up more women
as their electoral candidates.
Antunovic also believes the possible valuable contribution of
women in the process of reconciliation and dealing with the
consequences of conflicts is not sufficiently used.
She also addressed women's engagement in self-employment and
entrepreneurship. Women in Croatia account for more than 46 percent
of the overall workforce. The Croatian Government is trying to
prevent any discrimination of women in the field of labour and it
supports several national programmes, including the one helping
companies with surplus labour to avoid targeting women and older
persons.
Antunovic also presented data regarding the prevention of violence
against women. The Government is preparing laws aimed at improving
the protection of victims of domestic violence, Antunovic said,
adding non-governmental institutions, prevention and education
played an important role in this field.
Concluding her speech, Antunovic supported a stronger role of the
U.N., i.e. its commission for women, which, she suggested, should
from time to time discuss gender equality at the ministerial level
as well.
