ZAGREB, May 31 (Hina) - A delegation of the supervisory board of the
French company Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux (SLE) held talks with
Croatian President Stipe Mesic on investments into Croatia's road
and environmental infrastructure in Zagreb on Wednesday.
We came to express our wish and readiness to invest into Croatia and
help it use its advantages on the path to the European Union, a
member of the SLE supervisory board, Yves-Thibault de Silguy, told
reporters after the meeting.
The SLE is a leading international company with a 150-year-long
tradition in the construction of water supply and waste management
infrastructure as well as in road and bridge construction.
The company participated in the construction of the Suez canal.
According to De Silguy, the meeting with Mesic was the result of
attempts to strengthen the economic cooperation between Croatia
and France, which was agreed on during Mesic's recent visit to
France.
Commenting on concrete projects discussed, De Silguy said his
company was interested in a project regarding the expansion of
Zagreb airport, the construction of a waste water management plant
in Zagreb, and in road construction.
Mesic's advisor on economy Stjepan Zdunic said all services
offering technology for and the construction and financing of large
and expensive infrastructure projects were welcome as Croatia was a
developing country with a relatively low per capita income.
The SLE was ready for long-term investments in Croatia, on
condition of lawfulness, legal safety, and transparency of
business transactions, De Silguy said.
The French company participated, along with other 17 companies, in
an international bid regarding the construction of a central waste
water management plant in Zagreb, announced by the Zagreb
authorities in February last year.
According to a member of the SLE supervisory board and financial
advisor, Anton Vasil, the bid was annulled because companies
participating in the bidding assessed as illegal an attempt to
include in the project the construction of a Homeland Bridge over
the Sava River and the Culinecka Road, and to increase utility fees
for Zagreb residents as a way to co-finance the construction of the
water management plant.
