NEW YORK, May 29 (Hina) - Representatives of the Croatian World
Congress (HSK), Croatia's only non-governmental organisation
which participated in last week's 'Millennium Forum', organised by
the United Nations, said on Monday the event was very successful and
expressed satisfaction with their participation in the event.
'Millennium Forum' was organised on the occasion of the 55th
anniversary of the United Nations and ahead of the start of the
third millennium. It was attended by representatives from some
1,800 different civil associations.
Mario Viskovic, HSK's main representative at the U.N. and Eduard
Jambrusic, HSK's international coordinator, contributed
suggestions to the text of the Forum's final document, which will be
handed to the heads of state or government of 188 U.N. member-
countries at the Millennium Summit in New York in September this
year.
During a discussion of the Forum's working group for peace,
security and disarmament, Jambrusic suggested that the U.N.
Charter be adjusted to the modern norms of international law and
include the so-called humanitarian interventions by international
peace forces.
He also supported changes to the work of international financial
and commercial institutions such as the International Monetary
Fund, World Bank, and World Trade Organisation.
The Forum's working group for sustainable development and
environment accepted Mario Viskovic's suggestion for the U.N. and
international monetary institutions to help and promote the use of
renewable sources of energy, such as solar and wind energy.
