"DIOKOM" ENTERS BANKRUPTCY, WORKERS CONTINUE STRIKE

SPLIT, May 25 (Hina) - Split Mayor Ivan Skaric and factory temporary administrator Ivo Buric informed employees Thursday Split's "Diokom" factory was entering bankruptcy with plans for restructuring. Diokom workers, some 2,400 of them, who have been on strike for a month, said they would continue striking until they receive the full two to five months' salaries. Mayor Skaric told employees the factory's purse was empty, the state's debts were huge and no support, except moral support, could not be expected from the Government. Split is in an especially difficult situation, but my efforts to warn it was a town completely different from the rest in Croatia had gone unheeded, because for the Government all areas are equal, and equal rights are valid for all, Skaric said. Split is in an especially difficult situation, but my efforts to warn it was a town completely different from the rest in Croatia had gone unheeded, because for the Government all areas are equal, and equal rights are valid for all, Skaric said. It had been agreed during Wednesday's talks with members of the Government that the Diokom should declare bankruptcy with plans for restructuring, Skaric said, stressing it was immoral for workers to be paid 70 per cent of one salary, while some managers received huge amounts of money. Those who behave in such a way will be held accountable, however legal their conduct is. Ivo Buric said in the future all salaries would have to be earned on the market because there was no money otherwise. All employees will receive minimal salaries. Buric announced that the bankruptcy with restructuring meant the forming of several smaller profitable companies from the former Diokom which will function successfully and survive on the market. Deputy County Prefect Spiro Erceg and MP Zvone Puljic also addressed the employees. When Puljic said the Croatian Democratic Union was supporting them, some employees booed him. Union representative Jozo Maric said the strike had achieved a result after all because it had prevented the laying off of workers. (hina) lml jn
