The commemoration began at two p.m. with the intonation of the Croatian national anthem in front of the house Tito was born in. The gathering in Kumrovec however began several hours earlier. Before the commemoration began, those attending sang several partisan songs. Speaking about Tito's role in history, SABH president Ivan Fumic said Tito had been a great and far-seeing leader whose commitment to socialism was beyond question, a person who had dedicated his entire life to the struggle for the rights and dignity of man. "In the hardest days of World War Two and the people's liberation struggle, Tito was a spark shining for the conquered peoples of Europe. Besides fascism, he also stood up against Stalinism, as well as against military alignment, creating the non-aligned movement," Fumic said. Under Tito's leadership, Croatia took an important position in the anti-fascist coalition which became the basic idea of modern Europe, he added. Paying homage to Tito's personality and deed, numerous delegations laid wreaths by Tito's statue in Kumrovec. Among them were representatives of anti-fascist associations from Italy, Slovenia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Yugoslavia's Society for Truth on SABH's behalf today laid a wreath at Tito's grave in Belgrade. Many Tito admirers signed the book of impressions in the house he was born, while many thousands who had come to Kumrovec today could buy a variety of Tito souvenirs ranging from badges and busts to wine bottles with Tito's image on the label.
