At a meeting with the Croatian Government today I received very
encouraging news and hopeful prospects, Clark said after a meeting
with Croatian Defence Minister Jozo Rados and Armed Forces Chief-
of-Staff Lieutenant General Petar Stipetic Tuesday.
Decisiveness prevails and positive steps have been made in the
reform and reorganisation which are necessary to strengthen
Croatia's position in relation to the West, Clark said.
It is obvious there are high expectations, he continued. I thus wish
to forward the Defence Minister, Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff and
Government the best wishes and hopes for progress in the future.
Rados told reporters he had informed Clark with the work and
reorganisation of the defence Ministry into a civilian
institution, and with the Government's opting for the Ministry to
be under firm parliamentary control.
During the meeting Rados expressed hope Croatia would soon join
NATO's Partnership for Peace programme, which is only a step
towards the NATO and wider European associations, he asserted.
