Foreign Minister Tonino Picula on Friday held talks with a US
Congress delegation, headed by Republican Senator Kay Bailey
Hutchinson, Senator Jeff Sessions, and Democrat Congressman Martin
Frost.
The US delegation, which includes nine representatives,
Republicans and Democrats, from both Congress houses, is on a one-
day visit to Zagreb, organised within their Easter visit to US
troops in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Macedonia.
The US officials were interested in the current political and
economic situation in Croatia, as well as in the situation in the
region, the Government said in a statement.
"We are aware of Croatia's important role in this part of Europe and
the responsibility which arises from that role. The Croatian
Government favours good cooperation with its neighbours, it
actively supports the Stability Pact and wants to have some
influence on stability and peace in the region," Racan said.
It was stressed during the talks that the United States and Croatia
had a good military cooperation and that the USA was interested in
a good economic partnership with Croatia.
The US delegation welcomed Croatia's cooperation with the Hague war
crimes tribunal.
Croatia can doubtlessly contribute to the stabilisation of the
political situation in the region, the US delegation said.
Welcoming the courage and determination of the Croatian government
to implement reforms, Senator Hutchinson stressed the USA
supported Croatia's efforts.
The two sides expressed a mutual wish for the two countries to
continue and improve their good relations and cooperation.
