TOMCIC SAYS 'VJESNIK' DAILY NECESSARY IN CROATIA'S MEDIA FIELD

ZAGREB, April 11 (Hina) - Croatian parliament president Zlatko Tomcic on Tuesday received representatives of the trade union of "Vjesnik", who informed him the daily would die after 60 years in print unless the government by May 1 chose one of four motioned models for settling the "Vjesnik" issue. Tomcic said he would urge the government to take a position in connection with the daily paper's problems as soon as possible. He assessed "Vjesnik" was necessary in Croatia's media field. Union representatives support the model according to which the two entities under the name "Vjesnik", the daily and a printing company, would be separated, and problems would be solved separately in each. Union president Mladen Jambrovic said 200 journalists could lose their job unless a decision on "Vjesnik's" future was made soon. "Vjesnik" has been facing major financial difficulties for years.
