PULA, March 27 (Hina) - The Istra Union has announced for Tuesday a
protest rally in front of the Istarska Bank headquarters in Pula.
The rally is organised to protest "the danger Istra's workers,
citizens, and economy" have been exposed to following a suspension
of payments in Istarska Bank, blocked by a temporary administrator
on Friday, Union president Bruno Bulic told reporters in the
northern port of Pula on Monday.
"The citizens, and pensioners in particular, have been brought into
a hopeless situation. The Istra Union demands that the government
immediately start eliminating the difficulties which have arisen,
so that workers and pensioners may in an orderly manner withdraw
their saving deposits in order to be able to survive," said Bulic.
The latest events surrounding Istra's largest monetary institution
were not coincidental, he asserted.
Bulic believes it is high time something were done because "the
former government allowed foul dealing at all levels, while the
current government is cowardly, demagogic, and unprincipled, and
the poorest stratum is obviously at the receiving end."
Bulic urges the government and parliament to gather courage and
start eliminating difficulties as they promised to do prior to
January's parliamentary elections.
The temporary administrator deliberately decided to block Istarska
Bank, Bulic said, adding the aim obviously was "to bring the bank in
a situation which would make depositors leave."
In a statement issued today, the bank's union said the bank's
transactions were done by the rules and under the supervision of the
Croatian National Bank. Those who supervised the bank are now
closing it, the statement added.
